TWO BRITISH WOMEN HAVE BEEN ATTACKED IN ZANZIBAR
The two British nationals both 18 have been attacked by acid thrown on their faces and bodies by unknown men in Stone town Zanzibar. It is believed that the two women who were working as volunteer teachers at St. Monica Primary School, were attacked when were going for dinner. Police said two men on a moped threw the acid at the women which burnt their faces , chests and hands.
Other sources said Ms Gee had been startled earlier in the trip when she was hit in the street by a Muslim woman for singing during Ramadan. The two women were working under the umbrella of an NGO known as Art Tanzania run by Mr.Kari Korhonen being operated in Zanzibar for more than 10 years now connecting good wishers volunteers in from abroad and local community in Zanzibar to support in social development projects including teachers.
The current attacks is taking a new image in the faces of many citizens in Zanzibar and Tanzania in general because it is a first time for acid attackers to touch foreign nationals , as in the past few months ago even last year such these attacks were reported to be done against local religious and political leaders like the one reported in Zanzibar when Muslim clerics in Zanzibar and Arusha in Tanzania mainland were attacked by Acid and in the recent few Months another local government leader in Zanzibar and one businessman in Dar es salaam were all attacked with acid by unknown men and the suspected have not yet been captured although the investigation is still on, without forgetting the gun shots to two Christian priests named Everest Mushi who was gunned and killed while Priest Ambrose Mkenda survived gun shots by a grace of God with much severe injuries on his neck in an attempt to kill him.
"Our President Jakaya Kikwete visited the victims in hospital before they were released and taken to an airport. He said: “It’s a shameful attack that tarnishes the image of our country; I order security agents to speed up the investigations and arrest the suspects.” Zanzibar's minister of information, tourism, culture and sports, Said Ali Mbarouk, condemned the attack.
"We should co-operate with other government sectors to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice," he said."And I beg our nationals, this is not something they should be doing. Tourism is the strongest pillar of our economy, so if we do such acts we are killing our economy, and our livelihoods in general."So it is not an honourable thing to do, it's a bad thing and it should be condemned by all citizens of Zanzibar."
And as the Church we condemn the attacks which are now seemed to take new image in which if no serious effort are to be taken then it could endanger our national economy in this global business competitions especially in tourism industries and investment sectors, whereby Tanzania and Zanzibar could obvious benefit in gaining more tourists and investors than others from due to its resources of custom of hospitality and core values peace and harmony among its people with huge reserves of natural resources like wildlife, minerals and perfect beach sites plus many treasure of historical sites etc. We urge all the Citizens to join the efforts of our governments in order to end such these crimes against innocent people
We also call for all people who love to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar not to lose heart to come but keep coming and never allow those bad people to think they have achieved the evils by stopping good people to enjoy their time and investments in our beautiful Country Tanzania .
But we call also for our Governments to do everything possible to arrest and put the suspect into justice but also finding other ways to engage the over whole community in fighting against crimes from ground level especially to youth groups, also doing bigger efforts to ban down every teachings and speeches which could carries the elements of hatred and radicalizing people among the communities if done by any person despite of his position or influence in community
